About
Hi, I'm Kal McAulay
As a 2D concept artist my techniques involve designing and developing the overall Worldbuilding, then meticulously responding to this with my character designs. I work digitally, predominantly in Photoshop, but also use Krita and Adobe Animate while much of my initial sketch work is traditional, using a range of mediums. I've used these techniques in my current FMP project involving a concept for a 2D Mystery Thriller Game called GRIMM. I have been building character designs and using these designs to begin exploring animation.
I enjoy working with narrative and always aim to explore and identify my characters by observing them through the lens of storytelling and have always been interested in not only drawing characters from a young age but also immersing myself in the character driven media. I am inspired by Games that are heavily narrative-based, such as The Last of Us, one of my favourites. The Last of Us inspires me in how it introduces worldbuilding to the player and how the characters fit into the overall narrative of the world. This inspired my work in a previous project where I developed characters based on the jobs and experiences that would evolve in the environment I had fleshed out.
I personally enjoy working with storytelling that has a purpose, storytelling that stirs emotional connections within the player, as well as those with meaningful purpose; emotionally intelligent works. I have personally experienced Games that have altered my perspectives, and I believe Games have the ability to challenge viewpoints and generate discussion. In my own work I enjoy working with themes such as isolation, mental illness and horror as well as friendship and connection. My audience relates to those who have similar interests with this, and those who might respond well to Games with a deeper level of content and intrigue.
I am currently a recent graduate of a bachelors degree and I'm going to be starting an MA in Illustration in september and at the same time build my online presence to work on creative projects in Concept Art which incorporate my illustration skills. I aim to work collaboratively on a wide range of projects which may be character concepts/illustrations, commissioned work (concept, design sketches) and editorial design work for books and magazines and hopefully larger projects for film, games and television.
